Full XL is 54 by 80 inches in the cited US specialty profile: the width of a Full with the length of a Queen or King. That is 137.2 by 203.2 centimetres, or about 4 ft 6 in by 6 ft 8 in. The footprint covers 4,320 square inches, about 30 square feet. Use this nominal rectangle as a starting point, then check the outside dimensions of the actual mattress and frame.

Full XL compared with Full and Queen

In the same profile, Full is 54 by 75 inches and Queen is 60 by 80 inches. Full XL adds 5 inches of length to Full without changing the width, and it is 6 inches narrower than Queen at the same length. Two adults sharing a Full XL therefore have 27 inches each, the same as on a Full; the extra length helps a tall sleeper, not a couple.

Where it is used

Retailers list Full XL as a specialty size rather than a standard one. It appears in dormitories, guest rooms and children's rooms where a 75-inch mattress is too short but a Queen would not fit the room or the budget for Queen bedding. Availability varies by manufacturer, so confirm the exact size before buying a frame.

Room space for a Full XL

Consider a 12 ft by 12 ft room, with the mattress length aligned to the room length, both sides open, one 20 by 20 inch nightstand, and side and foot clearances each set to 24 inches. Full XL requires 122 inches across and 104 inches along the room, leaving 22 inches across and 40 inches along. A Full in the same layout also needs 122 inches across but only 99 inches along, so the only room-planning difference is 5 inches of length. These clearances are adjustable preferences for the worked example, not standards; door swings, fixed furniture and transport routes need separate checks.

Bedding and frames

Full XL sheets are less common than Full or Queen sheets. A Full fitted sheet is 5 inches too short; a Queen fitted sheet is 6 inches too wide and may not grip the corners. Look for bedding sold specifically as Full XL, and measure the frame at its outside edges before relying on the mattress size alone.

Check both orientations, nightstands and the walking space you want.
