About EU mattress sizes Continental European mattress sizes are quoted in centimetres and most of them are 200 cm long. The profile on this page uses the four EU sizes listed in the UK retailer size guide cited below, where they are sold alongside UK sizes: EU Single 90 by 200 cm, EU Double 140 by 200 cm, EU King 160 by 200 cm and EU Super King 180 by 200 cm. Use the unit control to see the same reviewed dimensions in inches.
A common core, not a single standard There is no single European standard that every country and manufacturer follows. Individual markets add other widths and lengths, and the same width can be sold in more than one length. Treat the four sizes here as the common core that cross-border retailers use, and confirm the exact dimensions of a specific mattress, frame and duvet before ordering.
Width steps of 20 cm The EU sizes step up in 20 cm increments from the Double: 140, 160 and 180 cm. A couple on an EU Double has 70 cm each, on an EU King 80 cm each and on an EU Super King 90 cm each, the full width of an EU Single per person. The constant 200 cm length means that choosing a wider bed never changes the head-to-foot space needed in the room.
How EU sizes relate to UK and US sizes An EU Single is the same 90 cm width as a UK Single but 10 cm longer. An EU Double at 140 by 200 cm is 5 cm wider and 10 cm longer than a UK Double, and about 55 by 79 inches, between a US Full and a US Queen. An EU Super King at 180 by 200 cm matches the UK Super King and is still about 5 inches narrower than a US King. The US versus UK versus EU page on this site shows all three systems with the same reviewed figures.
Frames and bedding EU mattresses are often sold with slatted bases and frames whose outside dimensions exceed the mattress by several centimetres. Measure the frame rather than the mattress when planning a room, and buy fitted sheets for the exact mattress size, because a sheet for a 190 cm UK length will not fit a 200 cm EU mattress.
