About US vs UK vs EU mattress sizes US, UK and EU mattress sizes use some of the same names for different rectangles. The table on this page holds the three reviewed profiles side by side: the six US sizes in inches, the five UK sizes and the four EU sizes in centimetres. Switch the region control to see each system drawn at the same scale, and use the unit control to read any of them in inches or centimetres.
Same name, different bed A King is 76 by 80 inches in the US profile, about 193 by 203 cm. A UK King is 150 by 200 cm, about 59 by 79 inches, and an EU King is 160 by 200 cm, about 63 by 79 inches. The UK King is therefore closest to a US Queen, which is 60 by 80 inches, and both UK and EU Kings are far narrower than a US King. Double has the same problem: a US Full is sometimes called a double at 54 by 75 inches, a UK Double is 135 by 190 cm, about 53 by 75 inches, and an EU Double is 140 by 200 cm, about 55 by 79 inches.
Closest footprints across the three systems US Twin, 38 by 75 inches, is about 96.5 by 190.5 cm; the UK Single at 90 by 190 cm is 6.5 cm narrower and half a centimetre shorter, and the EU Single at 90 by 200 cm is 6.5 cm narrower and 9.5 cm longer. US Full, 54 by 75 inches, is about 137 by 190.5 cm, within a few centimetres of a UK Double. US Queen, 60 by 80 inches, is about 152 by 203 cm, within a few centimetres of a UK King. US King, 76 by 80 inches, is about 193 by 203 cm, wider than any UK or EU size; the UK and EU Super Kings at 180 by 200 cm are about 71 by 79 inches, roughly 5 inches narrower and 1 inch shorter. US California King, 72 by 84 inches, about 183 by 213 cm, has no equivalent in either system because of its 84-inch length.
Why a few centimetres matter Fitted sheets, mattress protectors and frames are made for exact sizes. A UK King sheet on a US Queen mattress is 2.4 cm narrower and 3.2 cm shorter; it may stretch, or it may not stay on. A US Queen frame holding a UK King mattress leaves a small gap on each side. Imported duvets are sized by their own national conventions, which this page does not cover. Before buying across markets, compare the exact centimetre or inch figures rather than the names.
Lengths by system US sizes come in 75, 80 and 84 inch lengths, about 190.5, 203 and 213 cm. UK sizes come in 190 and 200 cm. The EU core sizes on this page are all 200 cm. If a sleeper's height is the deciding factor, start from the length column, then choose a width.
