About Oversized bed sizes

A standard US King is 76 by 80 inches. Oversized beds go beyond it in width, length or both: a Wyoming King is 84 by 84 inches, a Texas King 80 by 98 inches and an Alaskan King 108 by 108 inches. Use the unit control to see the same reviewed dimensions in centimetres.

How much bigger than a King

A Wyoming King is 8 inches wider and 4 inches longer than a King. A Texas King is only 4 inches wider but 18 inches longer, so it suits tall sleepers more than couples who want width. An Alaskan King is 32 inches wider and 28 inches longer, a square of about 81 square feet against the King's 42, roughly 1.9 times the area.

The room each one needs

With the room calculator's default walkways (24 inches on both sides and at the foot) and one 20 inch nightstand, a King needs a room of at least 12.0 by 8.7 feet. A Wyoming King needs 12.7 by 9.0 feet, a Texas King 12.3 by 10.2 feet and an Alaskan King 14.7 by 11.0 feet. The first figure runs along the headboard wall. A California King, at 72 by 84 inches, needs 11.7 by 9.0 feet.

Bedding and frames

None of these sizes takes standard King bedding: the Wyoming King is wider and longer, the Texas King much longer and the Alaskan King larger in both directions. Sheets, mattress protectors and frames have to be bought in the exact size, and some oversized beds are custom-made, so confirm the dimensions with the maker before ordering bedding.

Getting it into the room

An oversized mattress also has to travel through doors, hallways and stairs. Measure every turn on the route, not only the bedroom, and ask the maker whether the mattress is a single piece or ships in sections.

Sources and differences

The oversized dimensions come from the Sleep Foundation oversized mattress guide cited below. Another guide lists a Texas King at 80 by 96 inches; this page keeps the 98 inch figure from the cited source rather than averaging the two. Check the actual product before buying, because oversized sizes are less standardised than the common US sizes.
