Use a mattress preset or a measured frame
A projecting headboard, footboard or rail belongs in the outside frame measurement. Presets use the cited US nominal mattress dimensions, which do not establish the size of a particular product or frame.
Choose nightstands and walking space
Enter the number of nightstands and their measured width and depth. A blank depth uses the entered width as an explicit square-footprint assumption; two nightstands share the entered dimensions. Side clearance sits outside the combined bed and nightstand footprint. The initial 24 in side and foot values are adjustable preferences, not building-code or accessibility standards.
Read the result and the worked examples
The calculator checks both rectangular orientations and prefers a fitting layout with the larger minimum axis margin. The required room dimensions and drawing refer to that same selected arrangement. Zero remaining margin leaves no allowance for uncertainty. The fixed examples below compare a fictional 10 ft square room with and without a nightstand, using the same engine as the form. They keep their stated inputs when you change your own layout above.
Know what needs a separate check
Required room dimensions describe a chosen layout, not a universal minimum bedroom size. Doors, drawers, radiators, irregular walls and transport routes are outside this model. Check actual furniture and measurement uncertainty independently. Your room inputs and private PNG stay on your device.
The bed’s head is placed against a wall. Space across the bed includes the bed, nightstands and clearances on the open sides. Head-to-foot space uses the larger of bed length and nightstand depth, then adds foot clearance. Both orientations are compared; required room width and length follow the selected orientation. A fit describes this geometry; measure obstructions and the actual frame separately.
